Structure
Organizational Chart

Projects
The AG Nachhaltigkeit is a vessel for different projects.
There are recurring projects like the Sustainability Week Basel which is organized by the AG Nachhaltigkeit every year. Other projects have a clear goal which they are trying to attain or an event they are organizing, normally in the span of a year.
You can either join an ongoing project or start your own. To get further information about how to start your own project, consult the document “Guidelines for Project Funding” and the document “Project Application”.
Community
To enhance the community aspect of the AG Nachhaltigkeit, monthly Community Events take place during the semester, as an opportunity for the various project-groups to exchange among one another and for anyone interested in sustainability to meet like minded people.
Board
The Board of the AG Nachhaltigkeit includes representatives of various student groups, the AG Nachhaltigkeit project groups and the management. The aim is for the most active people in the AG Nachhaltigkeit to be on its Board. The Board decides on the financing of projects and the strategy of the AG Nachhaltigkeit. It meets once a month to discuss finances, ongoing projects and strategic matters. The meetings are open for anyone to attend and contribute their ideas.

Management
The Sustainability Office of the University of Basel supports the AG Nachhaltigkeit in its management until this is no longer desired by the AG Nachhaltigkeit. A student assistant, who is employed by the Sustainability Office, is responsible for the management. The Board of the AG Nachhaltigkeit confirms the corresponding student assistant as the management on an annual basis.
The management of the AG Nachhaltigkeit is primarily operational, but also thinks strategically and implements the strategies developed in consultation with the Board.
The tasks of the management include:
-
Maintaining an overview of ongoing AG Nachhaltigkeit projects.
-
Supporting projects as required.
-
Managing the AG Nachhaltigkeit WhatsApp community.
-
Organizing and running semester kick-off and Community Events.
-
Preparing and chairing board meetings.
-
Keeping track of finances.
-
Ensure interface between the University's Sustainability Office and the AG Nachhaltigkeit.
-
Develop strategies (e.g. for the acquisition of new members) and implement them in consultation with the Board.
-
Support the formation of the core team for the Sustainability Week Basel.
The above list is not exhaustive. The tasks do not have to be confirmed by the General Assembly.
Association
Since February 2025 the AG Nachhaltigkeit is an Association. This means that an annual General Assembly (Mitgliederversammlung) is held at which the President of the AG Nachhaltigkeit is elected and the other Board Members are confirmed.

Our Origin Story
Based on a student initiative by Marco Güntert, skuba tried to convince the University of Basel to sign the Climate Letter (Global Universities and Colleges for the Climate; The SDG Accord) and declare a climate emergency. At the meeting with the Rectorate of the University of Basel in November 2019, it emerged that the university would not declare the climate emergency called for by skuba and would also not sign the Climate Letter.
In the view of the President's Board, these two symbolic actions would not bring about any positive changes. The Rectorate would like to see more concrete projects to improve sustainability and, following a request from skuba, increased the workload of the Sustainability Office in order to realise student projects in this area. This gave rise to the Sustainability Working Group. Since 2019, a wide range of projects and events have been organised, position papers written and brochures on sustainable lifestyles produced. Future projects and events are also being worked on and new members with creative ideas are always welcome!
