Rooftop Greening

This project was one of the first after the founding of the Sustainability Working Group. With the support of the Sustainability Office and the University's Facilities Department, they were able to green their pilot roof at Mattenstrasse 28 and have since founded an association. You can find more information about their work on their website.

Our Vision

With the qualitative enhancement of green roofs, we are primarily pursuing the following objectives:

  1. Roofs that are already covered in greenery are being upgraded with specific measures to create an ideal habitat for bees and other insects.

  2. The population will become more aware of the roof as a living space. The aim is to sustainably improve the practice of green roofs in order to achieve optimal green roofs from the outset in future renovations and new buildings.

Public relations

We want to draw attention to the importance of optimally greened roofs as a habitat for native plants and insects and their importance. To this end, we provide information on all aspects of greening, offer help with your own green roofs and organise excursions to green roofs with the aim of arousing enthusiasm.

The knowledge of the advantages of good green roofs should be anchored in the minds of the people of Basel. This should make it a matter of course to include optimal greening when planning new or renovated roofs.
