Our Origin Story
Due to a student initiative by Marco Güntert, the skuba tried to convince the University of Basel to sign the Climate Letter (Global Universities and Colleges for the Climate; The SDG Accord) and declare a climate emergency. During the conversation in November 2019 with the Rectorate of the University of Basel, it was made clear that the university would not declare the climate emergency called for by skuba, and would not sign the Climate Letter either.
From the point of view of the Rectorate, these two symbolic actions would not bring about any positive changes. Instead, the Rectorate wanted to enable more specific projects to improve sustainability and thus, at the skuba's request, increased the Sustainability Office's budget in order to support student projects in this area. This resulted in the AG Nachhaltigkeit.
